Need relocation advise pls
I'm looking to relocate from Northern Virginia to either Queens/Jamaica Hills or Jersey City. Can't seem to figure it out. I also have custody of my six-year-old son who may come and live with me down the road. But I want to live affordably, near the train, near manhattan, and in an environment where lots of cool indians, or desis, live. Can anybody suggest?

Jamaica Hills would be rather pricey, and I don't think you'd find a large number of Indians.
Jersey City has a significant community of Indians not far from the Journal Square PATH train area. Not sure what area of India they are from. From my observation Indians from particular areas of India tend to group together. Whether they are "cool" or not is for your determination. Generally, they are not too assimilated.
In Queens, there are several communities of Indians from many areas of India/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka/Pakistan. Jackson Heights has a VERY large population and many Indian businesses and restaurants. I presume the people are from all areas of India.
There is a small and growing Bangladeshi community in Astoria, they are not "cool" and not very assimilated.
Also, in Jamaica, there is a community of Indians from Guyanna.
Overall from all the above, I'd suggest Jackson Heights.
Hope that helps.

From my observations, the Indian community near Journal Square isn't very assimilated at all(my assimilated Indian friends call them FOBS-fresh off the boat). I suggest you look into downtown/waterfront Jersey City but it'll be more expensive. There are a lot of Indians over there albeit it isn't an Indian community. There are both assimilated and non-assimilated Asian Indians over there. The good thing is that downtown conveinient to Journal Sq by subway(PATH) and car so you can easily go to the tons of Indian shops there.
Good Luck.

Hicksville Long Island has a huge Indian population...not as close to NYC as Jersey City or Jamaica Hills, but the LIRR gets ya there in a little under an hour. It's got a ton of Indian restaurants, hookah places, Indian foodstores and just lots of cool Indians Na'an anyone?

In Jackson Heights (Queens) near the Roosevelt Ave/74th St. subway station, there is an Indian area with a lot of businesses (clothing & food stores as well as restaurants) that are all Indian.
