Ridgewood/Bushwick - Halsey L Train Station Area
Hi Everybody,
Need your thoughts. I'm looking at a really great 2 family house on Norman Street, right off the corner of Wyckoff. It's about a block from the Halsey L train. What do you guys think about this area? Is it safe? I have friends who live in Ridgewood and love it but they're on the other side of Myrtle (central Ridgewood). This would be right (literally) on the Bushwick border. There are some factories in between the 2 hoods but it's right there. I did notice that there have been some loft conversions and a huge new glass/steel (dozens of units) condo building on Irving Avenue too - units just went on sale last month. So, is this area safe? I don't want to be afraid to walk around, in the day or the night, and I don't want to worry about my parents walking around there. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sharon

I lived around the Myrtle area about 5-6 years ago and used to take the L at Halsey. Personally, I think it was relatively safe, but does seem a little sketchy. It gets pretty isolated & quiet at night, and with the factories (and I think a gas station too), I'm not sure how safe it is to live around there. However, I used to take the train and walk to Myrtle and never had a problem during that time. The Halsey station itself and the L train gets pretty empty at night too so that might be something to consider.
I would suggest going around the area at night and walking around or take the train too and get a feel for it at different times of the day. Since safety is also based on perception, you should make sure you and your parents feel safe.

i would say its not a safe area. in addition to the area around the halsey street L train being deserted, the train station is a known robbery spot. i wouldnt move there if i were you, unless you're comfortable with living in a ghetto area, because thats exactly what it is.

Definitely ghetto, but I never had any problems over there, and this was about 6 years ago when I would go over there at different times of the day and night.
