I've bartended and served at upscale restaurants here in Michigan for the past 12 years. Now my husband is relocating to Manhattan for work and I was curious as to what kind of money people make there. If anyone could tell me of the best places to go, I would greatly appreciate it as I am not familiar with the area. I'm 28 years old and pretty cute btw

It's pretty good money especially considering if you end up in a popular place where you basically mostly pouring beers or making simple vodka mixes. I mean a good looking women behind the bar showing cleavage around a bunch of drunk men, the math works out very well. Extremely well, and people usually tip better once they've had a few drinks. Also since your mostly making tips, you get to mislead uncle sam at the end of the year (not that I'm encouraging this but just being real, this is what happens).

Tip: I would advise you to avoid college area bars. College kids usually aren't the greatest tippers. Otherwise just look for a popular spot, they fluctuate, but there are quite a few that always draw big crowds.

I don't know much about Michigan, NYC has a wide selection of the types of bars you can work out. We have the local pubs where you pretty much get the neighborhood drunks, so you probably won't make much at these places. Then you have your regular "happy-hour" type bars, which can get incredibly packed. I've gone out for drinks on a Tuesday and the bars were booming with people. Lastly, you have the upscale bars. These can be inside of a luxury hotel, partnered with a famous restaurant, etc. These are also very pricey (think $12 for a Heineken), and do not get as packed as the happy-hour types, but they also attract higher-end customers.

I would stick with the "Happy-Hour" type places. Great energy, environment, always busy, and a great opportunity to make good money.

I have a friend who is a bartender at a popular bar in the village. He makes at least $1,000/night on weekends(sometimes closer to $1,500) and $500 to $700/night during the week.

He sort of fell into bar tending after college and has never been able to extricate himself because he makes so much money. He used to work 5 or 6 nights a week and now only works 3 but still brings in a couple of thousand a week.

Like many jobs in the city, there are places where you can make a mint and places where you just scrape by. It all depends on the venue.

I bartended at a corporate restaurant in Times Square. I made between $300-$400 a night during the week and close to $700 on the weekends.

My husband worked at classier, privately owned bar and made close to $1,000 on weekends and no less than $700 on weeknights.
