It is a place for families who want to raise children in a loving, caring atmosphere, sharing with many other children. Most families that have moved here are looking for peace and quiet. If you want to party..........go to Manhattan!

I moved from Manhattan, to Brooklyn, to Staten Island, where I have resided for the past 35 years. I have wonderful, loving, and caring neighbors and most of them are Italian. But I am having difficulty understanding what all this people who post here are talking about, because I do not see the ugliness they see, maybe it is because I do not live in a city project, with all that ugly people from the other boroughs, who have moved here along with their roaches. Besides, we pay low- property taxes compared to other places out of NYC. I LOVE STATEN ISLAND! AND I love living among Italians. They are very clean people, family oriented, keep their houses beautiful, and are caring, and giving. We have beautiful restaurants that have been voted top by ZAGAT, lots of bakeries, coffee bistros, and salumerias. What more do I need?

I'm a half Italian islander from the north shore. The south shore has less crime and most neighborhoods are cleaner but it's filled with mafia wannabees and spoiled teenage "wiggers." Everytime I'm there I feel like it's a Sopranos episode. I'll take Sunset Hill, Silver Lake and Randal Manor anyday. Overall though, Staten Island has really gone downhill in the last 10 years.

I'm not judging SI, because I've never been there, but he didn't say anything about partying.. he just said it appears to be a lesser version of Queens which is very suburban on the NE side... what are you talking about?

The North Shore absolutely has more problems and diversity. You can do well finding a good public elementary school; the middle schools on the North Shore have more problems. But I prefer the mentality of the people on the North Shore generally, and for kids it's got the SI Zoo, the fantastic Children's Museum, and I live in a neighborhood where we could definitely get by without a car at all since I can walk to the supermarket, bank, bagel store, parks, express bus to Manhattan and a quick city-bus ride to the ferry.

All that sad, I think Staten Island generally sucks all over and would never encourage someone to move here.
SOME PEOPLE are so unknowledgeable that it is disheartening. NY mama: you obviously know very little about the South Shore and Staten Island, so stop discrediting it. This is where the MONEY is! About museums: Have you ever visited the Tibetan Art Museum in Richdmondtown? This town is full of history. I bet you have not. How about the Alice Austen House Museum and Park, in Hylan Boulevard? I doubt it. How about the Conference House, in Tottenville? Scarcely. And the Sandy Ground Historical Society, in Rossville? Doubtfully. And the South Beach Freedom Circle? And the Greenbelt Center, in Poillon Ave., SouthEast Annadale? NEVER HEARD OF THEM! !!!!!!!!!!! And your comment about your preference regarding the mentality of the people of the North Shore? Are you refering to JERSEY STREET? You obviously can fit there very well. And lastly, your comment about the ITALIAN culture that prevails in the South Shore? YES! Very Clean people, BEAUTIFUL, well-kept houses, very family- oriented neighborhoods, excellent parents involved in the wonderful schools we have, with their children, fantastic restaurants recommended by ZAGAT, many of them owned by ITALIANS, a multitude of SALUMERIAS, also owned by ITALIANS, that employ many people. How about the multitude of parks and greenbelts we have, all well-kept, and the beautiful Raritan Bay shore? You do not want to live in the South Shore, because YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO LIVE HERE!!!!!!!!! I am the one that shudders at your lack of knowledge!

The people are classless and are always confrontation ready. Staten Island was once a nice place to live years ago when there were plenty of open spaces with normal people living there, but as soon as the Verrazano bridge was built that all changed. The island was then flooded with Brooklynites who brought their culture with them. All the females look cheap with their fake nails, fake tan and gum snapping habit. And even the guys get their nails done, eyebrows waxed and go to the tanning salon. They think they look good with their gold chains and wife beater tee shirts but no one from the rest of the world takes these people seriously. If you raise your kids there, they will inevitably become handicapped with this culture. No one appears intelligent. The people who are actually intelligent, move because they don't want to be associated with Staten Island. Do yourself a favor. Don't move to Staten Island.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Because I travel a lot, and what I see is a downward spiral of our society, and its values that prevails in many parts of the USA, not only on Staten Island.

He said it was not very exciting to live in SI, so I said if he wants to party to go to Manhattan, there he can get all the excitment he wants.
