You have no chance for anything decent in SoHo or Tribeca. You could get a walk-up in Chelsea for 2000.

my friend lives in a pretty small apartment for 1900 in chelsea on the first floor of a walk up. Its a decent apartment. bedroom is probably 150 sq foot (they have a loft bed) and the living room barely fits a couch and if your sitting on the couch and stretch your feet out you can touch the wall. The kitchen is big enough for a 2person bar table and a microwave table. their are a lot of restaurants in the area. she walks to work in midtown and he walks to work in the financial district. longish walk but great exercise!
