Default moving to NY: information on Chelsea?

I plan on moving to NY from TX mid-January. Browsing through the neighborhoods and what they have to offer, Chelsea stuck out to me.

Can anyone give me any kind of information on this area?

Expensive, chic (doesn't really appeal to me, however, everyone's different) and many gay residents.

Very convenient location. I loved living in Chelsea because it was so easy to get around. Lots of "creative" professional types, designers, editors, marketing people. It's not as corporate/lawyer/banker as other parts of town. They're there, but not dominant, like in Murray Hill.

Chelsea Piers and Chelsea Market are great, and you only have to cross 14th Street to be in the Village.

The far west side of Chelsea is where the largest gallery district in NYC is located.

There's great transportation with many train lines running through.

Plenty of good restaurants and gyms, plus stores like Whole Foods and others of that ilk.

I absolutly love living in Chelsea. I'm a 22 year old girl and I always feel safe for the most part. I feel like around club row it can get a little sketchy at night but I never have had any problems so far. I actually have a funny story. I really had to use the bathroom after being out and i was hurrying down my street and i starteled a guy who was actualyl scarred of me! Ha it was kinda cute. I love having all kinds of great places to eat and great night life so near by. lots of subway lines and its easy to get to the west village when need be. It is a bit on the expensive side tho.

i hope it's ok i ask this...but how in the world do you afford a place in chelsea at the age of 22? i ask because i'm looking into moving to new york, i'm 21 myself, and the rent prices in manhattan are just mind boggling to me.

The answer is I don't. My parents do. I have a cute little studio for $2200. I feel like it has a really neighborhoody feel too. Every day I see the same guy walking his puppy and every day its a little bigger! I loves it.

Thanks for all the help!
I'm also 21 moving to New York. I'm just going into it knowing that wherever I get an apartment, it's going to be expensive. And Chelsea seems to be the most appealing to me right now.

Its a great place to live and I know you will love it! The police station is on 20th street between 7th and 8th. There is always something going on. If you like chelsea you may like the west village also. I feel like chelsea is a little quieter. Its good to stay eat of 9th ave tho since thats were all the night life is. there is also the high line which is really nice.

Chelsea is a great neighborhood, but it is very expensive. Unless you have parents paying for all your bills like the previous poster, there is no way at 21 you are going to be able to afford it. However, there are always subways and buses, you can always live elsewhere and travel into Chelsea to go out at night or spend the day there.
