You have to understand Italian is the largest ethnicity in New York City- there is Italian on every single street, of varying quality. Little Italy has actually been run over by an expanding Chinatown - it may be 1-2 blocks at this point.
10 blocks east in the trendy Lower East side is a good breakfast place with a massive menu- Shopsin's - Shopsins - they reopened in a market (Essex St. market)- not sure what the new set-up looks like.

Guess I should correct that - was looking on a wikipedia U.S. map from the 2000 Census - if you look closely and squint at New York City it might be African or Puerto Rican, but all the surrounding areas are Italian largest.

Uhh I've never been to Shopsins but I'm familiar with it, and it has "rules," and an eccentric owner. The food is excellent from what I've heard but it can be an intimidating place for someone who has never been there. I just thought the OP should be aware of that.

i second shopsins its excellent food and excellent atmosphere any morning
unforunately the food there is very heavy, so if you are on a diet youre better have cheating for a day. on the bright side breakfast is usually enough food so that you could skip lunch
kenny shopsin(the owner is the humorous people you will ever meet), also his co-workers interactions, and the clientele have interesting conversions(like the stuff on podcasts)
rules of thumb don't ask too many questions, NEVER come with a party of five or more, everyone must order food, and no food allergies
i highly recommend the french toast breading pudding
btw for italian food gravesend, BK would be more italian NYC experience and better food than little italy (Joe's of Avenue U)
