nyc boroughs or nj?
I currently live in CA and am currently in the process of finishing paramedic school. I'd love to work for FDNY, but I'd roughly make 43k annually.
I know that isn't much, but I am single, and plan on no kids. What areas would I be able to afford, are they safe for walking home after a night at the pub or would my best bet be living in NJ and commuting over?
Thanks!

You can definitely afford to live in several decent neighborhoods in Queens such as Astoria, Rego Park & Forest Hills.

I'd stick with Brooklyn or Queens. You might be required to live in NY if working for FDNY. I know firemen have to but I don't know about paramedics.

Woodside and Jackson Heights in Queens are nice and affordable. I think Woodside has lots of irish bars, too, if that's what you mean by pubs.

A huge percentage of NYPD and FDNY live in Staten Island, New York, which is one of the five boroughs, and pretty safe. Most of it is Suburban. There are lots of Pubs, and Zagat rated restaurants. I believe you will need to live in one of the five boroughs, to become a member of either one. Welcome.

It would be tough living on $43K in NJ. I'd stick with either Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island.
