White Plains Road in the Bronx
Hi everyone,
What kind of reputation does White Plains (around 233rd street) have in the Bronx. Is it a danagerous place to live and to bring up a child there? Is there alot of crime there? Are there places to visit like parks, museums or restaurants? My son is an avid football player (12 yo). Is football popular in New York?
Thanks in advance,
Haleema

funny you ask about that
because i just found out there is some kind of Bed & breakfast Inn on 233 street off WP. 233 and WP Rd itself has a lot of vehicle and pedestrain traffic from nearby Montefiore North Hospital (formerly Our Lady Of Mercy Hospital), the area has it's good and bad blocks. Go north or south of 233 street and WP Rd is kind of grim. I know, I work in the area and have since the early 90's. I feel safe working in the area, but the area has always struck me being kind of dull and drab. In terms of restaurants, lots of jamaican and W Indian places
When you cross 233 street over the bronx River Parkway you're in Woodlawn and you have the famous Woodlawn cemetery and some good Irish restaurants

Doesn't sound too inviting. I am trying to relocate to NY with my son. The rent seems to be a problem, because it has increased alot of the years. If the rent is affordable in White Plains I may have to make do, at least, temporarily.
Many thanks for your feedback.

Don't move there! It's a bad area with lots of gang activity and crime. A 92-year-old women who lived on 224th and Barnes (block away from White Plains Road) for 50 years was shot and killed by a stray bullet while she was sitting on the couch yesterday. I lived on Bronx Blvd off of 226th street (2 blocks away from white plains road) for about a year until I just HAD to move. The rent was $800/month for a huge 2 bed apt in 2002 but the noise and the fights were ridiculous. It wasn't worth it to live in that area.
That's a horrible neighborhood for a 12 year old child to live in. I know someone who lives on Paulding and 221st and she called and told me that the Bloods were having a a gang initiation today targeting women and young girls. I thought it was a rumor until a nurse I know working at Jacobi told me that that two young women were brought to the ER after being slashed in the face off of Allerton Ave which is about a mile away.
Just don't do it...unless you intend on picking up your son after school and locking him in the house every single day until he goes away to college
Parks? Museums? Restaurants? You have to be kidding right? Make no mistake this is the hood pure and simple. The typical fare is small family owned restaurants that serve mostly West-Indian style food; Jamaican, Guyanese, and Trinidadian fare. The other types of "restaurants" that you will find are chinese take-out, Crown/Kennedy Fried Chicken chains, or the local McDonald's/Burger King.
There is a big park straight down the hill that runs along Bronx Blvd from 211street and Gunhill to 233street where the highway takes over. It's pretty safe during the day time but I wouldn't set foot in there after dark.
The only museums that I know of is the Bronx Museum which is located off the Grand Concourse by the Courthouse in the 160s. There is also the Valentine Varian house on Bainbridge Avenue or the Edgar Allen Poe House in Poe Park around Fordham road and neither of these places are anything to write home about.

Haleema, what is your rent budget ?
The area you are thinking about( White plains Road and 233 St) is not a very good neighborhood.
You would be much better off looking in other much safer areas of The Bronx like around Pelham Parkway and White Plains Road,Parkchester,Norwood and Bedford Park.
The areas near White Plains Road further South are much ,much nicer and the rents are very reasonable by NY standards.
Along White Plains Road stay South of Burke Ave,which is about 205th St

I just saw on another thread that you can pay $1,200 /mo. That is enough for you to get a very decent
2 br apt in a much better area than White Plains Road and 233rd St.
You will definitely be able to find an apt in Pelham Parkway,Bedford Park,Norwood,Morris Park,Pelham Bay,Throg's Neck or Woodlawn.
You really might want to look in the Pelham Parkway area.It has some decent schools, has a lot of parks (including The Botanical Garden and Zoo),good subway lines,is very safe and has a fair number of moslems.Lots of shopping and restaurants too.

yeah
I saw on the news about gang initiation stuff this week in the bronx
I work off WP Rd and 238th street. While nobody bothers innocent pedestrians(I always felt safe there), WP Rd and 238th up to Mt vernon is like 8th Avenue in the theater district in Manhattan used to be before they cleaned it up--prostitutes and drug dealers and addicts abound
I work on a side street off WP Rd and I've passed johns in cars making the scene with prostitutes as well as other more grisly stuff like a dead dog stuffed in an open car trunk with other trash inside

This is the link to the Times Article. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/22/ny...hoot.html?hpw# The problem is that there are a lot of unsupervised teens who are creating havoc in that area. Also at night there is prostitution and drug dealing right out in the open on WP going toward the Mt. Vernon area.

my aunt has a house over on barnes ave a little lower (215th) and let me tell you it is a zoo over there. You dont want to live around white plains road unless you go farther south
if your looking for a better place try parkchester or if you are willing to pay .. riverdale
