Default Price of an average meal in NYC

Some friends told me that an average meal was $20 for lunch and a bit more for dinner. Is this true (especially if i dont get a drink/tip)? I'm not talking average for a tourist, but for a normal local.

Also, I've heard that parking in manhattan can reach $30 an hour. can someone give me a basic range of parking prices?

Thanks a lot in advance!

That's not true. You can spend less than $5 or over $500. The range is vast. There's something for every taste and budget.

There's no such thing as an "average" meal.

It depends on what you consider an "Average" meal.

Parking is usually something like:

$15/1 hr
$20/2 hrs
$30/2 hrs up to close

To give you an idea, I usually park in a lot when I go into the city... and I always end up paying around $35 for the day and/or night.

When I go out to eat with my husband at a decent restaurant, we usually spend about $80-100 for appetizer/dinner/dessert. Bump that up to a GREAT restaurant and we've dropped $400... but then again we can also grab something at a hole in the wall place for $10. It all depends on where you eat.

I'm not sure what "average" is, but you have a ton of options. You can get 4 dumplings for a dollar, or a dollar slice of pizza, or a Banh Mi sandwich for $4...

But if you're talking about a restaurant with table service, I'd say you're looking at $12 and up. There are cheaper options in Chinatown, and Thai places are usually very reasonable. Some people eat cheap in this city, some people eat expensive meals. Obviously there are a lot of very expensive restaurants to serve the tastes of all the very wealthy people in NYC, but most people don't often eat there. It is incorrect to imply that one must spend $20 for lunch in NYC. I'm not sure what the statistical mean or median would be, but I'd think it'd be under $20 for people who don't have expense accounts or work in finance or some other high-pay industry where excess is celebrated to such an extent.

Parking in Manhattan is expensive, but most Manhattanites don't even own private cars, so it's not really as much of an issue for the average person here.

The parking rates are true... but as far as a meal...

That is absurd to claim that an "average" meal is $20.00... no place "average" would have those silly prices. You can get a decent lunch or dinner in Manhattan for less then $10.00, if you know where to look.

Parking in NYC could cost up to $30, depends where and how long.
On meter parking, it's usually $2/hour.

Avg. meals could cost anywhere from less than $5 to over $100.
Lunch is usually maximum $10.
