It's right on the fringe of Bed-Stuy & Bushwick and yea it's pretty rough. I was gonna rent a room not to far from there on Halsey, but couldn't do it.

See i have been there late night on weekends, and it seems pretty dead to me. And i have been there daytime and it seemed alright.
It being "the hood" doesn't say much. Most of Brooklyn is "the hood", yet it doesn't make it unsafe. Especially not if you mind your own business.
What would make it a bad place would you say?

it being "dead" is the problem....nobody out on the street at night...a lot of robberies go down around there, and there's lots of selling drugs and the occasional shooting in the area. but we must deal with what we can afford....if you've been around there already, why are u asking for a description of it if u already know whats there?
oh and i forgot to mention gang activity

Its not the best but not the worst either. I had a friend that stayed over there on Grove and spent alot of time over there. Me personally would live there with no problem but thats just me.

Im asking because even though i have been there, those who live there would know the neighbourhood better than me. As they know how things go down on a day to day basis. But it also gives me a chance to see how other people describe it. I guess for me drugs being sold etc isn't much of a problem for me. As long as im minding my own business. Even in Manhattan drugs are sold on every other corner.

This is what I posted in another sticky
"This is true to a degree, but what a lot of people tend to overlook when they make statements like "as long as u mind your business you'll be fine", is that sometimes you accidently get caught up in the gang on gang, drug related stuff even when trying to mind your business. I.e..catching a stray bullet, witnessing something you shouldnt have witnessed, being the random target of some foolish gang initiation maneuver (face slashing) or constant loitering. Those types of things still can linger in some locations even when major crime is down."
Point is, even when u dont think u see anything, most places or areas have a reputation for a reason. Murder may down overall in the area but still, a lot of little stupid stuff may go on that you might not want to be bothered by as an adult

Well, I live 2 blocks from Gates and Bushwick. I've been here for 5 years. I've never had any problems as far as crime. My block is tree lined, and very quiet. Most people seem to have been on this block for most of their lives and know each other. I've walked down several blocks were it seems to be the same. In the 5 years I've lived here the racial demographics have changed dramatically. Just going by my very unscientific survey of the commuters on the train platform in the morning, it's about 35% Latin (puerto rican & dominican), 35% Black (afro american), 25% White (young hipsters), and 5% Asian (Chinese & SE Asian - I've seen a lot more this past year). The station is very packed in the morning with office working professionals. They really need to consider opening up the other exit of the platform.
The only place I see people hanging around is at the bodega by the train station but most of them are old drunks who don't bother anybody. There's a good amount of shopping too. Also, it's not a bad commute into Manhattan. Yellow cabs will bring you from Manhattan. From the LES; expect to pay about $15.00. Apartment prices are around $1,000 - $1,200. They have gone up with the influx of hipsters. Overall, the area around Gates & Bushwick is different then when you go deeper into Bushwick; ie Knickerbocker, Wilson, etc.
