Been looking online for a nice detailed map of New York City(The whole island(if that makes sense)).
I want something I can either print or buy.
Or will I have better luck in New York finding one for free?
Thank-you

You can get a NYC subway map for free at any subway station agent.
You can probably get a free NYC map at the NYC Visitors Bureau.

Default you say the whole island

but that is only manhattan. there are 3 other boros too. best bet is to buy a 5 boro map in a gas station in the ny area or in a bookstore. they give you a street index

I suggest buying a tour guide book & map from your local book store. You won't have trouble find stuff to do... so much to see/do... so little time.

By New York City(The whole island), you would be referring to only the part of New York City that has a "New York, NY" mailing address, which is the Borough of Manhattan (coterminous with New York County).

New York City also includes the Borough of the Bronx (coterminous with Bronx County), the Borough of Staten Island (coterminous with Richmond County), the Borough of Brooklyn (coterminous with Kings County) and the Boroigh of Queens (coterminous with Queens County).

To make this even more complicated, the U.S. Postal Service has divided the City of New York into 7+ postal cities: New York (covers Manhattan and the Bronx), Staten Island, Brooklyn (covers most of Brooklyn and parts of northwest and southwest Queens), Long Island City (most of the original Town of Newtown in Queens), Flushing (includes all of the original Town of Flushing and parts of the Town of Newtown in Queens and also part of what was Town of Bushwick in Brooklyn), Jamaica (most of the original Town of Jamaica in Queens and a small area in what was the East New York section of the Town of New Lots in Brooklyn) and Far Rockaway (in Queens). (Additionally, a few small areas in the Bronx are serviced by post offices located in Westchester County and hence have "Westchester" mailing addresses, such as "Yonkers, NY", "Pelham Manor, NY", etc.)

This is a nice series. Manhattan Map

Apparently they sell them on Amazon
Amazon.com: Streetwise Queens Map - Laminated City Street Map of Queens, New York - Folding pocket size travel map with subway stations & LIRR stops (9781886705593): Streetwise Maps: Books

There are separate maps for separate boroughs, and I believe the Manhattan map probably doesn't go higher than 110th or 125th.

the best place to go would be to the NYCity store at 1 centre street. im sure you would be able to buy a nice map of the city there.
