I recently happened upon the expression "bridge and tunnel", and upon researching it I have found it to be one of the most elitist, obnoxious expressions I've heard of. It really rubs me the wrong way. Has this expression been around a long time or is it a new thing? Do people actually have the nerve to say this in NYC, or is it just in the media and the safety of the internet forums? What do those of you from the other boroughs think about this saying? Sorry... just had to vent.

I don't think people are that snobby here... not the ones I associate myself with anyway.

I can't image why anyone would be offended by it. I guess I got thick skin.

I hear it all the time! I never hear anyone complain about it. Its a true term. Those people have to come over a bridge or go through a tunnel!

Where I lived there were people "from the other side of the tracks". And they actually did live on the other side of railroad tracks.

Yes, they do come through a bridge/tunnel to get to Manhattan... but it's supposed to be said in an insulting way, that's why. Things like that don't really bother me, so I don't really care one way or the other.

Please....................... It is obnoxious & it is supposed to be derogatory.
It has numerous connotations. None of which are good.
