My husband and I will be moving to Brooklyn in December and need a little advice as to what is considered family-friendly & safe. We need to be close to my school as I am a grad student at Pratt Institute in Clinton-Hill. We have a 4 month old and are looking to pay between 1,400-1,6000. This is also for short-term (1-2 years, so it's not like we plan on making this our permanent home).

We lived in Bay Ridge and loved it, and I'm familiar with the Clinton-Hill area as well as some parts of Park Slope and Boreum Hill. Unfortunately we can't really afford Park Slope at this time, and Bay Ridge is too far of a commute so I am mostly interested in information about Williamsburg, Bushwick and Prospect Park.

I noticed a lot of avaliability in Bushwick and "East Williamsburg". More specifically, Broadway & Putnam Ave. Nostrand & Jefferson, Eldert & Broadway.

What are these streets like? We plan on flying in and taking a look before committing to anything, but are also limited in time and information in advance could help us narrow down our search.

Thank you.

Ok, just so you know, mostly anything around Broadway in Brooklyn is trash. I lived lose by for a long time. BroadWAY and Putnam has long been a sketchy area and Broad going east woll put you right smack at the door of Marcy Projects with Bushwick houses right down the block. Bushwick has a few decent blocks here and there but dont be fooled, its still mired in poverty. Nostrand AVe is usually crap too, all the way down. Williamsburg from I hear nowadays is a bit trendy but also dirty and expensive.

Remember, Brooklyn overall is better than what it was, but if prices are fairly cheap some places and you see a lot of availabilty, that may tell you something

Williamsburg is out of your price range.East Williamsburg doesn't exist. It is the real estate industries name for west Bushwick which doesn't exist either but you get what I mean....it's Bushwick.Mostly not a nice area.
That leaves Prospect Park ,where you might actually find something interesting.... or forgetting about the commute and going back to Bay Ridge. The commute is really not that bad and Bay Ridge is a far,far better area than any of the others. If you care about your daily environment I'd stick with Bay Ridge.... but give Prospect Park a shot first if you must.Forget about "E Williamsburg" and Bushwick.

You know what, i was actually gonna say this but I wasnt sure. "East Williamsburg" sounded like a joke. Im just realizing that Bed Stuy was rezoned a few years ago so that now a certain portion is considered a part of CLinton Hills. Basically Bed Stuy and Bushwick have too many bad historical connotations attached so people have created new names to sell property.
The OP has to go and check properities by day and night to get a good feel for an area and not neccesarily listen to the mixed opinions of an online board

Well we were aiming for 1400-1600, because I assumed with the economy being bad, rental prices would be lower. We're home owners in Chicago, so we still have a mortgage to pay, which is why we didn't want to get too fancy with what we rent in Brooklyn, but how much should we consider to pay if we want to live somewhere decent? And where should we be looking?

Putnam and Eldert are a few blocks away from each other. Relatively speaking, I would not say that that is a particularly safe/family-friendly part of Bushwick. I have a couple of friends who live around there with their families though so of course this is a generalization. It all depends on what you're comfortable with so by all means go check it out if you think you're interested.

Nostrand and Jefferson is in Bed-Stuy and also not really that great of an area IMO. It is pretty close to Pratt, though.

Marcy Projects are not on Broadway. Sumner Houses are.
