Hello!

I have this friend who "wants" to move to New York City and she would like to know "What part of NYC does most Black Southerners live?'' She also would like to know "does southerners get make fun of in NY?"

There are a lot of young people from the South living in Astoria, Queens. One of my good friends lives there and I spend a lot of time there, and I have met several people from North Carolina and a few from Georgia and Florida.

Do they get make fun of because they are from the south?

Well thats inevitable. Theres just an overall sentiment that Northern Folks feel towards Southerners where they cant help but make a few jokes. But if you (umm your friend), is tough skinned and hardworking citizen, its not something to worry about

I didn't notice the word "black" in your post. All of the Southerners I have met in Queens are white.

Bed-Stuy would be my guess. I've met many black southerners who've relocated here and claim to live there.

This is a little far (but just a little) and technically not NYC, but a lot of them in the city of Mt. Vernon, which borders the Bronx in southern Westchester County and has excellent Metro North access as well as to the terminus of both the 2 and 5 trains. While there's been an influx of Caribbeans in recent years, still plenty of black southerners.

When I lived in Harlem, I knew of quite a few older Black folks who had homes in the south, and spent part of the year down there. Pretty anecdotal, but hope it helps, don't think your going to find actual stats on this.

A long time ago, yes, but not as much now, and honestly, it seems actually easier for Southern blacks to be accepted than Southern whites in NY. Because of the mass migration of black NY'ers to places like ATL and the Carolinas, there is a lot of back and forth traffic between NY/NJ and the southern states. Your friend should be fine, just learn some of the rules.
