Because generally when most people think of Manhattan they exclude anywhere above 96st, which has plenty of studios under $2000.

So far all my friends who live/have lived in studios uptown for under 2,000 haven't been murdered. I guess they should count themselves lucky.

It's definitely easier to find a studio for under $2000 compared with 2-3 years ago. Rents in Manhattan have come down a lot.

Either that or they at least close their doors!

I suppose that poor poster believes that simply walking out the door is too dangerous and stays inside behind 10 locks on the door and has their groceries delivered because "you can get killed shopping" then cites the Walmart incident.

it all depends on what you are looking for. are you talking about post war -door man buildings? from my experience, you can definetly find a studio for less than $2000 in pre war- walk up buildings.

I'm fine with a walkup building, a doorman building is not something I'm seeking out. Mainly I'm looking a place to sleep lol, but with an ok neighborhood ( with common sense, I can get by without getting hurt!)

You should check out the thread about the tiny apartments that SeventhFloor posted. When people say "I'm just looking for a place to sleep lol" it seems to me they might not fully understand what the full range of what is considered an apartment in this town really is.

I can vouch for the fact that you can get a reasonable apartment in a nice area for less than $2k/mo. I moved to NYC 4 months ago, and I'm renting a ~400sq.ft. 1 bed apt with a ~100sq.ft. balcony (400sq.ft. doesn't include the balcony) on W89th St & Columbus for $1950/mo. There are a lot of horror stories posted on these boards, but as long as you have realistic expectations then you can pick up something decent for that amount of money.
