The MTA can price fares just below the cost of car ownership. The MTA runs about $1250 per year nowadays. How much does owning a car run? Theres a lot of spread for the MTA to capture. Lol
They have their customers by the balls and they know it. The only thing holding them back is city politics.

Tax the beggars. Should result in a tidy profit. Imagine a beggar coming through you car asking for a quarter, a dollar, anything you can spare. And when he reaches the middle a plainclothes MTA revenue agent pulls out his badge and demands he turn over 50% of whatever he's carrying.
Slash the pay of management. Before ANY fare increase demand the publishing of ever person and his earnings in the MTA employ making more than $$75,000 in 2011 in the NY Times and Online.
Disclose also the recipients of every private contract negotiated in 2011 worth over $100,000.
Let the public be armed with the FACTS and then let the MTA try to cry poverty.
The MTA is top heavy!
