I agree with that, however it can still be done. In my opinion, its at least 2 hour trip on each direction:
One way is to cross the Hudson at the bear mountain bridge and catch the Hudson line train from Fishskill. That will bring you down to grand central. From there, you'll need another ride (by subway) downtown.
Second option is to take the NY throughway down to NJ and then the Path to Penn station. There, you'll again need the subway to downtown.
I also heard rumors about a bus from Orange or Rockland county to NYC, but have no info on its schedule and fare.
