Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't find any info anywhere. If I rent an apartment in Brooklyn, am I responsible for shoveling the walk in front of my building or is the landlord or the city? I just don't want to get in trouble.
Any landlord who tells you to shovel in front of his or her building should be reported to the city! (Unless they're going to volunteer to pay you for the service, of course).
Actually, I think this might depend on how many units are in the apartment and whether there is a clause in your lease. I have heard that for house rentals and smaller buildings (3 or less units), some landlords can include a clause in the lease that states the tenants are responsible for shoveling the snow.
If the landlord lives in the building or has a super, then I would assume either one would be responsible, but I would just double-check your lease to be sure.

I have NEVER, born here and in over a half-century of living here, heard of that. EVER.

Even if a LL does write that mess into a lease the Landlord is the one city will come after regardless.
NYC tenants do NOT shovel snow, unless they want to.
Don't shoot the messenger!
But in all seriousness, it is true. There are legal forums (I can't post links to other forums here) where the same question has been asked, specifically for NYC, and responses for multiple law firms in Manhattan have stated that it is the tenants responsibility for snow removal if it is on the lease and the landlord can not legally be held liable.
Whether that's right or not is for another discussion. My only suggestion to the OP is that he/she check the lease to see if there is a clause before assuming it is not their responsibility.
