Hi, these boards are always so interesting to read. Would you recommend a private middle school for an 11- year old in the Bronx? He's currently attending public schools here in VA and I'm strongly considering placing him in private schools for the move to NY. He has always wanted to be an engineer and has attended several engineering camps and programs. I'm sure there are a lot of outreach programs for student engineers in NY. Please recommend!

Thank you.

I am an engineer in NYC. Good public schools are Bronx Science (The Bronx High School of Science) and Stuyvesant High School (stuy.edu: about Stuyvesant) and High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College (HSMSE - The High School for Math Science and Engineering). They're more geared towards solid college prep and are among the top schools in the country - and they have strict admissions policies for gifted students. Private schools... There's Horace Mann in the Bronx and Hackley in Tarrytown (Westchester). They cost an arm and a leg, possibly an ear as well.

There are a lot of engineer outreach programs for high school students. There's the Future city competition, engineer's week, etc. Do some searching around the NSPE and ASCE websites... start with this one 2010 Engineers Week Programs: February 14–20.

Good luck!

wow, thank you! How awesome to get this information from an engineer. I will be researching. My family in NY has told me all about Bronx Science. It's at the top of the list. Thank you so much.

Happy New Year.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann School - Private elementary, middle and high school in New York) is in the Bronx and one of the best schools in the country. Its math/science department is very well regarded.

You should also consider Ethical Culture Fieldston (Ethical Culture Fieldston School). Also a very, very good school.

Both of these are highly selective and extremely expensive.

The three public high schools mentioned above are also exceptional. They're free, but hard to get into.
