Speaking of landlords--if the OP had the shoe on the other foot and lived in a slum where the landlord tried to get them out by harassing them, refusing to make essential repairs, etc. he might have a different viewpoint. Day after day I see stories of long time residents who put up with deplorable conditions because they can't afford to live elsewhere. Some have lived there for decades or more, but they now are forced out illegally to make room for the more moneyed "newcomers." Now THAT'S something to be angry about.
If someone lives in a building without essential services, of course their hood is going to be run down, but so many people blame it solely on the residents themselves.
PS---this is happening as we speak in upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Ever hear of the Pinnacle Group? Do a quick search if you're curious about what I'm talking about.

This thread is to review the demographic and quality of life situation in each part of brooklyn. I'm telling you ahead of time that I am white, 30 and I am of jewish and italian decsent. I have a masters degree and I am NOT a bigot.
My prediction is that wthin 10-15 years, all of brooklyn will be Russian, Asian, Spanish (not even black). Not being one of those ethic groups is bad, but I hate feeling pushed out of where I live because of the bad attitudes some ethnicities bring to the table as well as there ability to turn sections of brooklyn into slums and lower the quality of living standards.
The Russians are totally taking over brooklyn and slowly leaking into staten island. They have terrible attitudes and feel they own brooklyn. They are very dangerous drivers, very hot headed and feel the world owes them something. I feel threatened by them (and I'm a big guy) that a fight will always ensue b/c of their faux affulent attitudes and there willingness to slice someone's throat for a dollar.
RANDOM THOUGHTS. The homes and illegal aparements keep on going up in the east side of town (black sections), it takes 25 minutes to drive 2 miles on the streets, Real estate is on an increase despite the sub prime loan plague, medical and car insurance are the one of the highest in NY 5 boroughs (thank you Russians for the medical fraud and insurance fraud).
It is so sad to see a group of people living the way they do (the blacks) in areas like bedstuy, east new york, east flatbush, brownsville. Eventually they will be bought out by hard working minorities like Asians and Mexicans. Most of the blacks I run into now hate brooklyn and are moving to Georgia and Virginia (cheaper living, and surrounded by there own folks).
The Russians own Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, and Brighton Beach and they have turned it into what Americans now nicknamed "little Odessa". What a horrid group of individuals.
Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights... Guineas (hate them) ... now becoming Asian (look at sunset park). Borough Park and part of williamsburgh (the Jews their make all the stereotypes that apply to them seem true).
The yuppies are in park slope, downtown brooklyn, red hook, dumbo, etc.... They have money and they are slowly changing the neighborhood but they pay up to 3k for a studio apt.... This is one of the last decent spots in brooklyn but still, you cannot own a car there b/c of the parking situation...
I never thought I would say this but I am planning to move out of brooklyn when my finances work out and after the wedding.... Due to the line of business I am in, I still have to have access to the 5 boroughs, but I am thinking Long Island if I can pay the taxes out there, but most likely a nice part in north jersey.
It truly is a shame and misery needs company so I would really like to hear from others on the siutation as well.
Thanks
Derek L.

Hmm. I think you are burnt on NYC. As I read your post, I began thinking about how New York City was established by all different types of people, from all different parts of the world, and how we all co-exist today in harmony. NYC is all about this--living together in harmony with all types of people, from everywhere.
I respect your opinions and understand the issues you are having--but they seem to just be your personal issues with others. As a result, you sound as if living amongst other races is just not what makes you comfortable. So, I'd move away.
I work in Williamsburg/Greenpoint/Bushwick/Ridgewood/Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and do not see the same things you mention.

This thread is pure comedy.
A white, highly-educated guy in his 30s complaining about Brooklyn being taken over by Hispanics, Asians, Russians etc. etc.? I think if you go to 5th Avenue in Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene, Williamsburg and many other places in Brooklyn, people will tell you that Brooklyn's problem is precisely that it is being taken over by white, highly-educated people in their 30s.
People migrate. Cities change. Get used to it.

Until you live in Brooklyn, you cannot understand how it feels to be resented because you are an American. We are not speaking of enclaves, it is more like an invasion. The Russian immigrants are not assimilating. I am not speaking about older people, the kids are not speaking English on the streets even though they know how to and are speaking it in school. There is a definite resentment on their part for the Americans that are still here. The Asian and Pakistani kids here are speaking English and I generally have no problem living amongst them because they are not arrogant or rude. Thee are good and bad in all races because after all humans will be humans. I have no patience for a people that have defrauded insurance companiesat our expense, brought in their home grown mafia, illegally obtain food stamps and other benefits that Americans are paying for, and in general are quite arrogant. I did not choose to move to Russia and never would! They have brought it here and it sucks. As I stated in an earlier post, these people have no sense of responsibility concerning the ecology, they blow their noses on the street minus a tissue and spit on the sidewalk so that walking here is nauseating experience. Tree beds are used as garbage receptacles and they drive ridiculously large vehicles. Bottom line....YUK!!!

American? I'm an American. You can never say you are American. You are blank-American ie: German-American, Jewish-American, Russian-American, etc. There is no "pure" American. Don't try to fool yourself, it'll get you nowhere.
I think this thread is unfair to Russian New Yorkers. This is plain bashing.

I teach ESL to adults. About half of my students are from the former Soviet republics. They're in my classroom because they're eager to assimilate and acculturate into American society. There are thousands of others like them but unfortunately there aren't enough classes for everyone. About 10,000 people are on waiting lists for English classes across the city. Of course this is only a fraction of the story of the immigrant experience in New York. My point is that it's unfair to those dedicated and hardworking people when we make harsh generalizations about their group.
Generalizing about any group is a waste of time and energy. It's all relative because everyone who has come through Brooklyn has been resented due to irrational stereotypes. Yet those groups eventually assimilated and moved on after about two generations. Whether anyone wants to believe it or not, the immigrants today will do the same thing. So relax, it's going to take years.

I guess sickofnyc lived/lives in Brighton Beach or surrounding area? I can understand his frustration in the sense that true assimilation includes respect for current residents. If mobs are involved that is a serious issue too.

Can we turn this thread into what the question originally asked? Because I was interested in that!
Who lives in Sunset Park? Bensonhurst? Crown Heights? Park Slope? Speak up! Tell us what your neighborhood is like, what you like about it, what you don't?
Don't tell us about Williamsburg though- I'm sure we all have a good idea what that's like, no?

I live in Windsor Terrace (the neighborhood next to Park Slope), and it's very racially mixed, and I like that. Our elementary school, P.S. 154, is (according to GreatSchools.net) 58% white, 26% Hispanic, 8% black, 7% Asian. When I go to the playground in Prospect Park with my kids, I see white kids, black kids, Hispanic kids, Muslim kids, and even Hassidic Jewish kids (who don't actually live in my neighborhood, but come to Prospect Park from Ocean Parkway).
I'm not having any issues with it. The neighborhood is nice and clean, we're right next to Park Slope, the elementary school is great - what's to complain about?
In fairness to the OP, if whites were only a tiny minority and I saw hardly any white people, then in all honestly I'd probably feel weird, like I didn't "fit in" or something. Not a racism thing, just like I don't fit in or that I stand out too much.
But the way it is now, it's a mixture of races, and I'm very comfortable with it.

Sounds nice....How's the rents there? Park Slopeish prices, I'd presume?
