I think your right. But not all of the crimes are due to the economy.

Too true. I don't actually think any of the crimes are due to the economy. The economy may be a trigger though for some, which means the mental problems were already there but were perhaps exacerbated.

Well... when the economy goes down, police get laid off. Less police=more crime sooo...economy does lead to more crimes, in a domino kinda way.

They can always destroy the qaulity of life in ANY neighborhood. Budget cuts are a fact of life, and in fact, the government is so bloated we NEED to make some serious cuts, or rather a total restructuring, to get the house in order. In the short term it is painful, but in the longer term it makes our city stronger because it is fiscally balanced, more efficient, and effective, at least in theory. The good news is Bloomberg is making the hard decisions to keep the city sound, rather than borrowing and putting us in worse shape. Thank you Bloomie.

The good news is cops aren't being cut. I think we can all agree that they have continued to be cut over the years, but now is not the time for this dept. and other areas need more focus.

Disinvestment is one of the main reasons for cities to start crumbling. A year may not seem like a long time, but it really is. Especially since we won't get out of this fiscal trouble for a few years.

Disinivestment is one of the main reasons for EVERY community (city/suburb/ex-urb etc) to start crumbling. Not sure why you keep singling out NYC as if budget cuts or disinvestment have no effect on any other place. A year really isn't a long time...it's the 3+ years that we are facing that will be the most challenging.

Quality of life will no doubt go down over the next couple of years, and expenses/fees will go up, and up, and up as the city is strapped for cash. It won't be fun, but it should also be noted that it is normal, and cyclical for the economy to go up and down, so this should not be surprising to anyone older than 30.

The city's residents, and Bloomberg, are in such fear that the 70s/80s/early90s return, that I have the utmost confidence that that level of deterioration won't be allowed to happen. You can see the reaction with the minor uptick in crime...the city is up in arms and Bloomie and the police are taking strong action. The city will be stronger after we come out of this in the next few years.
