Do you have a degree program you are looking at? What kind of school do you want, i.e. a large school where class sizes are in the hundreds or smaller classes where there is more interaction between professors and students? You have to give more info about what you want in a school.

Great school in a nice area but not the most convenient place to travel to by public transportation.

I'm actually a student at St. John's and I'm a native of California too...Long Beach to be exact. I LOVE St. JOhn's. Stunning location, gorgeous campus, great technology, and professors that really care. Public transportation does suck though. You have to take a bus to get to the train and the train ride is LONG to get into Manhattan. I will warn you though, St. John's is NOT a party school so if u are looking for Frat/dorm/keg parties you won't find it here! It is a great school though. The Pharmacy, business and communication programs are excellent.
