The express trains run til about 10pm in the Manhattan to Queens direction on weeknights.

It does seem like every other time I ride that train it turns from express to local or vice versa. Sometimes there is even a circle on the outside of the train and a diamond on the inside (this is supposed to denote express vs local).

My point was that the express 7 trains are really only for commuters who have regular 9 to 5 jobs in Manhattan. Not that they are the only ones who benefit from the 7 in general. I have a friend who lives in Woodside and teaches in Flushing. The express trains are totally useless for her because they're running in the opposite direction when she needs to use them.

Other express trains, the 4/5 for example, run all day in both directions and on weekends. It would be great if the 7 worked like that, but it doesn't.

Well, yes...as soon as someone finds the money to create a 4-track line along the 7 route, voila!
