NY Annie, i've lived here all my life, but i can still understand what you're saying about the city being daunting, particularly the subway system. i suggested this to someone else in another thread, but you might want to try the lower east side. the subway commute would be fairly easy- F line and like a 5 minute walk. the rents there are also fairly reasonable. your only roadblock will be that 3 month lease. you should check craigslist for sublets.

Chuckling - I grew up in Jersey and used to cut school and head over to the Museum of Natural History - yeah, I'm a nerd. I would take either the Path if I had already gotten on the bus to school or take the express bus into Port Authority. I used to get lost on the subways all the time - not paying attention to which train I got on, missing a stop, just exploring.

But I've experienced all kinds of transportation from the super rural where my college was located - if you missed the bus back from town, you had to call someone for a ride or hitch hike - and you were just as likely to get picked up by the farmer/family in a buckwagon - but that was the hills of Appalachia many years ago. Being a city girl, experiencing THAT was a little daunting. I also remember bringing home country girls for semester breaks and watching them deal with "the city". Scared the poop out of one taking her into the subway!
