Hello,
My partner and I are planning on moving to NYC at the end of the year. We will have saved up about $25,000 for the move with the intention of renting. I am a graphic designer with 10 years experience and my partner works in retail in the creative sector with experience with some of NY's biggest designers. So here is my question: Is NY ageist – specifically employers? If this matters at all I am in shape, take care of myself and really don't feel or look 44. My style is current without being trendy. That's not to say I'm in a alternate world where I think I'm 25. Most importantly the company I work for keeps the design team up to date in current creative applications. I'm not so much writing this for my partner than I am for me. We live in Seattle very comfortably but the bottom line is we truly don't like living here. Actually let's cut to the chase: We hate it here. We tend to take two trips a year to NYC and finally have come to the decision that you only live once and why settle with a city that does not challenge you in any way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're unhappy you should move. My only caveat is that graphic design is one of the most competitive industries in the city. On top of that, the recession has hit it very hard. Advertising in all forms is way down.
I don't think New York is ageist, per se. However, at 44 they will expect you to be at the top of your game. You're looking at a lateral transfer. The question is: do you have the portfolio to merit a lateral transfer to the most elite design market in the country?
This could be a great move. Just make sure you have have researched the old folks homes thoroughly. Your partner can look for forward to many sultry games of evening bingo and nights by the suspended TV.
44 is not too old to move to NYC!
Even 94 is still OK, providing you have cash... the more the better
