No in NYC it is completely different. Hispanics (Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans) and Blacks (African Americans, Jamaicans, Nigerians, Africans) are very close with each other. We hang out together and everything. In NYC, we see each other as equals due to the fact that we are in the same struggle...Puerto Ricans were with the African Americans in NYC when Hip Hop was created. I have never seen this kind of unity in any other state. all in all, Everybody gets along with each other, because NYC is a melting pot. Check the links below for more information.

I forgot to mention even though NYC is a melting pot, there will be racist people here and there, but it is not common.

AAs and PR/Dominicans is totally different than AA and Mexicans. I'm a Heinz 57, black/white/latina and I've had nothing but A++ experiences.

as an aside, my daughter is 1/2 mexican

Mexicans and blacks in L.A. do have similar struggles, which is why I was always shocked at the level of tension. But i guess its different because on the East Coast they live in close proximity to each other and add the fact the PR'S and DR's have alot of African heritage as well. In turn other hispanic groups like South and Central Americans and mexicans are ok with blacks as well. I also think the gang factor is so deeply entrenched in L.A.'s history which really accelerates the divisions, whereas the gang situation in NYC is a relatively new phenomena and isn't strong enough to mold race relationships.

There is a gang factor in NYC, teen gangs were systematically broken by NYC gov't in the 1950's, and never fully regained that type of power, until the current times. This is probably some of the reasons that they are not as entrenched as the gangs in L.A.

Also NYC culture is one that favors individualism, probably more than anywhere else on this planet.

Thats true, and even when there were teen gangs in the past like the era from the 50's-70's, different gangs came and went, and racial lines began to blur as gangs like the savage nomads took in black members. The current resurgence is more divided along ethnic and racial lines, but its not as strong as it is in L.A. And even if they were they don't have racist agendas like what the Mexican mafia has recently implemented as far as purging gang controlled areas of all blacks, gang members or not. But I don't know L.A. well so it could be that the gang situation is where racial tensions exists and not between the regular people themselves.

Not even close. What's ironic is that you'll find many more PRs/Domicians who dislike Mexicans than they do Black folks. At least that's how it when I was coming up.
