Need suggestions on a source where I can find decent supply of apartments for rent and compare prices.

As a complementary question I wonder if there is a source that would help to distinguish between safe and not so safe parts of NYC.

Craigslist is a great source for apartments, but you have to becareful of some ads, because pictures are deceiving. You could also go with a broker mainly because its their business to have thousands of listings. Just let them know where you want to live, the amount you are willing to spend on rent per month, and any other misc. info(dogs, kids, etc.)

Craigslist has become the norm, unless it's very big-budget. And the Times still has better classifieds. NYC has become very safe, but the city probably has crime statistics available.

@ nyctobk
Thanks for the ideas! I wish I knew where I wanted to live & how much to spend. I hoped somebody could suggest an open database so that I can research prices & estimate price vs distance to downtown, etc.

@ Cida
No high budget for me . Thanks

craigslist is about as open as you can get, you could also check out the local newspaper but craigslist is your best option. I suggest you figure out how much you are willing to spend, and some areas you might want to live. If your a young single male/female, try the lower east side, or maybe somewhere where there is a night life. I suggest soho, union square, chelsea
