Yesterday, I was taking my daughter to her Saturday activities. We took a cross town bus and then transferred to an uptown bus. When we got on the cross town, I dipped my Metro Card twice (once for each of us). When we got on the uptown, I dipped the card and it didn't have the automatic transfers and charged me another fare! I didn't dip it again, but told the driver that we JUST got off another bus and the transfers should have been on the card!

The driver said that sometimes there are problems with the fare box and that could have prevented the box from reading the card correctly. She gave me a transfer card that was supposed to be good.

I dropped my daughter off, walked a few blocks to take another crosstown bus to go to my things while she was in her activities. Well, I dip the free transfer card and IT DIDN'T WORK!! I explained to this driver what had transpired and we both looked at the date stamp on the back of the transfer card and it should have worked. He let me on the bus anyway.

What in the world is up with the Metro Cards?!?! Has anyone else experienced something like this????

There have been several threads here about the Unreliablity of MetroCards....I had this same problem a while back.

MTA needs to hurry up with Tap n GO - Metrocards are on borrowed time.

It happened to me today with my 30-day card. It made me swipe again multiple times and when I checked at the booth the person gave me a form and said to mail it in with the card. I am a full time student working part time to pay for school. This completely throws my budget off bc I had to buy a new card and hope the mta will refund me.

If the card doesn't work at all, be careful with how you are storing it. They will refund you if it's damaged, but only once or twice. Be careful of magnets - the black magnetic strip on your credit cards, the magnetic clasp on your bag, phone, or laptop cover, etc. Those will all cause the metro card to stop working.

Just part of City life.

Last week I took the subway then caught a bus 80 minutes later. Instead of XFER OKAY I got another fare deduction. I'm guesstimating it happens to me one time out of 10.

I have stopped getting apoplectic about it but it DOES enter into my decision about whether to get 30 day unlimited whenever the decision is close. The 30-day card has never screwed up for me.

They tell you if you have a dispute, just send in the card...yeah, RIGHT!

Hate, hate, hate the metrocard system. It is so wasteful and glitchy. Taking everything into account IMO we went backwards not forwards when we went from tokens to metrocards...

It happens. 9 times out of 10 the MTA employee will get it and let you through anyway. I notice mine has problems after storing it in my back pocket and sitting on it, so be mindful of how you store of as others have suggested. It is just a flimsy piece of plastic, afterall.

Trouble is when you are charged for a ride improperly you only know it AFTER you are charged, so no transit employee is involved. Just you and the fu#$ing machine.
