Red face Irish girls moving to NYC

Hey,

I'm one of 3 irish girls moving to NYC for 6 months....i've been to the city a few times but am no expert on any of the areas. We're looking at accomodation in manhattan as we will be working around midtown. We have an eye on a few places between 100 - 110 st on the east side. Most likely we'd be around 101-103 street. We'd be 3-4 blocks from a subway stop and closer to the river side than the park side.
Rent is pretty reasonable, approx 700 each, but out main priority is safety.

You all seem to know your stuff so i was hoping you could help us out....is this area safe, if not, can you recommend a better area??

Cheers

If safety is your concern you choose the wrong neighborhood. Last night there were two shootings where someone was hit in the small neighborhood of East Harlem. Shots fired is an everyday thing. There are public housing projects everywhere, highest concentration in the USA.

Might want to try an affordable area in another neighborhood. The rent is a ripoff for that neighborhood these days. While they try and make you pay 1400 a month, your neighbors on section 8 and the people in the PJ's and other gov't housing are paying 100-200 dollars a month. Plus you have to deal with all that areas bull**** like not being able to go out at night, people messing up the lobby with graffiti/trash, gunfire at night, loud music (Hip Hop or Spanish) at all times of night, constant police activity, and regular ghetto problems.

In Manhattan look south of E 96th on the East side. W 110th on the west. If looking in the LES, stay far away from the pjs as possible, same goes for all PJ's in any area of Manhattan.

Also try Queens (EXCEPT for Jamaica, Far Rock, Corona, East Elmhurst) , Southern Brooklyn minus Red Hook and Coney Island too much public housing in those areas (also try Williamsbridge although gritty, sketchy at night, Park Slope and Greenpoint) or Staten Island away form public housing.

I would not recomend females especially to live in East Harlem. It's not like it's a death sentance but the area has a lot of povetry (ghetto problems) and the culture is very different. Men can be VERY disrespectful towards women in that area.

By law, (or some unwritten rule) young Irish people can only live in one of two neighborhoods in the city: Woodlawn, Bronx or Woodside, Queens.

Personally I would choose Woodlawn, but I guess thats just me.

Keep your eyes on the classifieds in the Irish echo for apartments: Irish Echo Classifieds for the week of May 30th - June 5th 2007 (http://www.irishecho.com/classifieds/index.cfm - broken link)

There are also usually a lot of message boards in Woodlawn where people advertise apartments or rooms for rent. Woodlawn is a pretty good choice, fairly easy acces to the 4 train and lots of good pubs and whatnot.

"6 months"
Usually if they were brought over on H-2B VISAS isn’t the employer is supposed to house them and see them off before the expiration date?
Lots of Irish illegally in this country in especially Woodside, sounds fishy

Yeah there are lots of them here illegally, but is that such a problem?

There's over 10 million illegal Mexicans in the country now, and the government does nothing. Why should I be concerned if there are a lot of illegal Irish in my neighborhood? They don't break the law and behave themselves, as long as liquor isn't involved ;-) .

Same problems.
There always always liquor involved on weekends. I rented to 3 in Montauk in a week I had 12 who partied till Sunrise. They destroyed the place, it looked like a trashed dorm with beer cans, mattresses and bed sheet room dividers all over the place
Lucky I didnt give them a lease the Sherrif would have never have gotten them out.
NEVER again.

Actually I think the young Irish H-2B's "imports" are worse! These "young ones" bartend do restaurant work and start to party 11-4AM, bring drunken friends home with them.
They know how to fist fight like West Side Mo_Fo too when you have to confront them.
All the Mexican's (I know) on LI dont want the cops around and are passed out by midnight to get up at 6AM.

Excuse me Joe, but what exactly sounds "fishy"? If that was in anyway an innuendo that I am some young illegal immigrant just over to drink cause trouble for a few month then, you are extremely mistaken. Yes I am young, but I am a student who is just about to undertake an internship with a leading American firm, with a visa of course.

I appreciate that you have had a previous bad experience, however in my opinion, for every 1 young irish person (or of any age or nationality for that matter) who go to the states to party, drink and end up causing trouble, there are 10 more who are there just to experience life in america, have fun and not to cause any trouble. It is extremely unfair, and also ignorant, to tar everyone with the same brush.

Thank you to everyone else who has provided help with my original question.

Hustla718: I must correct you. Men can very VERY disrespectful towards women ANYWHERE...not just East Harlem.
