Default Anywhere near NYC that I can afford?

Hi, i am searching for a apartment around $700-900 a month. In a decent area that isn't crime infested is this possible? I am currently living in Oregon but originally am from upstate. I would like to be within half an hour to NYC or in the heart.

You can't have it all.
You can find a very nice apartment(studio) in a nice, low crime neighborhood for 850 or 900 but it won't be 30 mins to midtown. It will be 40 or 45 minutes to midtown.

You'd be hard pressed to find any sort of studio for $900, even in a dodgy neighborhood. You could probably get a decent room in Brooklyn within half an hour of Manhattan though.

Haven't been to Brooklyn in a long time. Is it pretty safe?

I was actually thinking of my neighborhood,Pelham Parkway,Bronx but there are other neighborhoods as well.Morris Park,Pelham Bay,Woodlawn. You might even find a studio in Riverdale for $900 if you look really hard.

Is Pelham Parkway a good place? How do you like it? Safety? I am curious because I actually just called on a studio there for around $800 not bad.

Morris Park/Pelham Parkway is hardly dodgy and there are really nice studios for 850 or 900... totally renovated in a pre war bldg.
I know someone who just rented a real 1 br in Riverdale for 950.

I like it a lot.
Good subways to midtown( 2 and 5) in about 35 or 40 mins, lots of stores, next to Botanical Garden and Zoo,no tension low crime neighborhood, lots of nice buildings, good restaurants in next door Morris Park, lots of varied ethnic flavors.
Zero nightlife and absolutely no Starbucks if that concerns you however. It doesn't bother me,obviously. There are a few Albanian coffee shops though that have much better coffee.

Do you know where the studio was ?I am pretty familiar with most of the buildings in the neighborhood.
