I know what the automatic answer would be, but stop for a second and think about it. In my neck of the woods, there are many that say they should be banned from LA. But why stop there, regardless of history a city has with them?
Reasons stated by them:
They don't create vibrancy
Have no redeemable value for the communities that have them
Fire hazard
Visual Blight
Mask Architecture of buildings
Anyway, I don't mean to sound like a troll. This is coming from someone who actually likes billboards, and wants them done in the right way in LA. But I keep getting slammed because of it.
But why? Why should NYC have them, for the reasons stated above?
Again, I don't wanna sound like a troll, but I keep on hearing these arguements from people on places like Curbed LA. And quite frankly, it's kinda drove me nuts.

The billboards in Times Square are in integral part of the culture and personality of New York City. Banning them from Times Square would be like banning pizza in Manhattan. Fuhgeddaboudit!!! Those billboards (or spectaculars as they are officially called) are New York . . . brash, bold and big enough to attract visitors from the world over.
I think billboards are a complete waste of millions of dollars... how often do you see an ad on a billboard about something that you've NEVER heard about? That's the advertising perspective.. but, I wouldn't want to see billboards leave Times Square.. they really create the environment with the way they're stacked.. anywhere else, no need.
No. I would strongly oppose garish advertising in historic neighborhoods, but Times Square has never exactly been a historic district. The bright lights and advertisements are part of Times Square's character.
but Times Square has never exactly been a historic district.
If so, then LA Live definitely isn't either ( BTW, even as an angeleno, I know it will never become Times Square, but I believe the billboards have brought pedestrian activity to the area.). And yet they're there, as well as on Hollywood Blvd.
I actually think all major cities should have their own Times Square-like area.

It's just one of those things that are synonymous with New York City. They are changed regularly and don't get run down.As someone else said.Maybe remove them everywhere else but def not Times Sq.
The billboards in Times Square represent the culture, personality, character and uniqueness of midtown in New York City.
Also, they attract visitors from all over the world and bring in dollars to NYC through tourism. However, these need to stay in Times Square, they have so far.
