Yes, I know, I shouldn't have moved to New York if I was afraid of bridges. However, I did and I have been able to avoid most of them, until now. I need to get to Staten Island and my original plan of catching the ferry has been altered as I'll need a vehicle on the island.
Someone mentioned the Holland Tunnel, but I can't see how it connects to Staten Island. Does it have an exit of some sort that isn't mentioned on the internet?
Please help me because the only way I can see myself crossing the Verrazano is in the trunk of someone else's car.
It is an Island. There is no way to get there without using a bridge.Even if you go through a tunnel to New Jersey you will have to take a bridge(either Outerbridge or Goethals) from there.
You might have to take the ferry and then use public transportation or a taxi( or both) when you get there.
By the way,the bridges from NJ are scarier than the Verrazano .
Back in the 1970's the bottom section of the Staten Island ferry was for cars. People would drive their car up the ramp and into the ferry and then take the stairs to the upper level.
The ferry is still in operation so while you can get to Staten Island you will have to leave your car behind. If this isn't a big deal than your problem is solved.

Ask the psych for some Xanax.Take them about a half hour before you cross the bridge.Unless you have a benzo tolerance you will be fine.My mother had the same fear of bridges. The pills helped, she only popped them for bridge trips. And definitely go via Verrazano not Goethals- very narrow.
