Some advice for those about to buy uniforms for the first time. Dont go overboard and buy much more than you are required to. Give yourself a little time to get adjusted to the job. You need to be sure you can handle it physically. Ive seen some, not many, new people come and go relatively quickly. They were in decent enough shape, but didnt have it in them to do the work. The work takes its toll on your body. And it takes some commitment to wake up hours before sunrise and go out to pick up tons of garbage, especially on days like these past few where every pail feels like it weighs 200 pounds. You will need to ask yourself, and very soon,if you can make yourself do the work in some of the worst conditions. Its not about being able to do it,its about you making yourself do it or not. After that is settled in your mind and heart, then you should be safe to spend money on extra uniforms and gear. And keep in mind that while your are on probation you need to be a perfect employee. Once that is up,you will have more leeway and will find some garages arent very strict and you will be able to find ways to cut costs on these things. Good luck.
Bklynsanman u need to go to the deffered comp page before u tell these guys that u can collect on the 457 plan whenever u retire. It's actually 59.5. Most peole don't know that.
Bklynsanman is correct, you can start to withdraw from the 457 as soon as you retire up to 20k a year without any penalty's. The 401 you have to wait till 55.5.
Another piece of advice to all of you coming on, pick up some rain gear. Get a decently priced set of pants & jacket & rubber boots if you wish. Keep in mind, you want something thats not going to bake you in the summer too much. You may have to get a light one for spring, summer & fall & maybe a lil heavier one for winter. Also, DO NOT leave this gear unsecured. Keep it in your car or your locker when you do get them. They will disappear & sadly, it's most likely one of your fellow workers that, "so called, borrowed it" & then realized they imaginarily bought it sometime before.
I had to decline at orientation because i didn't get my license yet. I heard they're taking more people in the next 3 months.. is this true? If so, do i need my CDL permit before orientation, or can i obtain it during the whole process??
Don't bother with Staten island .he store is way overpriced. For example the jacket is 199.99 and pants are 34.99 each.
