You don't want to live there. It's not the worst area in the Bronx but it has it's problems being state public housing. Last summer some White teens were assualted just for being White in the complex. They got hurt pretty bad. The only Whites you see in Co-op are seniors so unless your Black or Latino, if your young you may not have the greatest time. There are also a lot of shootings for some reason there to. They had to install rooftop gun sensors for the whole complex. It was getting pretty out of control. Better areas in the city to look.

Please.....
This thread seems ridiculous.
I live in Co-op City. Its not as bad as the other member made it sound. There is a mix of white, black and latinos in this community. True that the major portion of whites are elderly and the community is primarily black and latino, however we like our community just like any other people would about their neighborhood.
Any shooting or mischief is between teens hanging outside. Its the children of the working folks that cause the issues. THis isnt compton. The maintenance for our apartments are to high for that.
Co-op City has their own police force and they take no reservations to keep things peaceful.
However we have a community of 55,000 people here (or more).
Its a percentage game.
In contrast the communities around Co-op are also very lucrative. This area is booming - heck even Trump is building near us.
Dont belive the hype.
By the way, my girlfriend is white from Bayside Queens and she comes here at all hours of the night and day. Never had a problem.
Sorry for messing up your paper, but if you where looking for gangland, then where you need to go is Compton.

You heard it here first, all is safe. Girlfriends must be doomed in Compton.
Anyway like I said, Co-op isn't that bad but it has it's problems. Not really an area with heavy gang activity although gangs exist there. Wierd how the OP would choose this area. I guess it's part of his study. Must know people in the area. Enough gang activity there to do a report on though.

Co-op city was at one time a decent working class, lower middle class area, but there has been steady decline over the years. It's a ghetto, albeit a nicer ghetto. It's also isolated from the rest of the Bronx.

Pros of Co-op City:
1) Mitchell-Lama co-op, that means you can buy the spot (or shares) at very very low prices!
2) Near Bay Plaza Mall
Cons of Co-op City:
1) Mitchell-Lama co-op, which makes it limited equity. And there's a cap on sale price! And don't you have to sell it back to the co-op if you move?
2) How far from public transportation (subway)?
3) How many votes are needed to opt out of the Mitchell-Lama and go free market? 2/3?
4) Did they fix that garage yet?

Co-op city isnt that bad of a place as some make it out to be, NO there arent any gun sensors placed throughout co-op city, and there are very small gang problems within the youth but very small and also being taken care of. the police force thats there are not rent a cops, they have every power a nyc police officer has with the exception of executing a warrant, and trust me with 1 patrol car that patrols the coop area from the nypd we should be glad to have our force here, they take their work very serious and have a very short response time along with the fact that they show up in bunches. with all that said why wouldnt you want to live in coop. its a decent place for a decent price in comparison with the rest of nyc.

I heard the complex is slowly sinking as its built on marshland. Is that true?
I would not live there. Looks like a Soviet housing complex populated by down and outs.
