Default Doorman vs. Non Doorman in Midtown??

I'm moving to Midtown from another state and I'm wondering if there is really a big safety difference between getting into a doorman building vs. a non doorman building. I know very little about NY, and I feel like a foreign exchange student. Everything is so different. If you can give me pros and cons to both I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about safety too much in Midtown Manhattan. As long as you stay south of 96th st on the east side and 110th st on the west side of Manhattan all of the neighborhoods are pretty safe.

Someone else will have to fill you in on living in a doorman apartment. Thats too rich for my blood.

Having a doorman is a safety issue, but it's also something that makes life much easier. I had a friend living in a an apartment IN a townhouse (not an apartment building) on Fifth Avenue in the 70s - facing the park. Gorgeous neighborhood, VERY safe, considered the 'Gold Coast' in zip code 10021. No doorman, of course. The problem arose with package delivery, dry cleaning delivery, etc. And in the summer, many dry cleaners in NYC are closed on Saturdays, so getting to and from the cleaners on Saturdays wasn't an option in the summer. She always wanted a doorman so that she didn't have to constantly trek to the post office to get a package, constantly try to arrange her day (she was a critical care physician, so this was tough!) so that she could get/bring in her dry cleaning....
