Hi my name is Nichelle and i am moving from northern VA to New York Staten Island. I am a new graduate from george mason university with a BSN, Rn. i recently did a intern in the ER in VA. I just wanted to know about the hospitals in NYC. The hospital that i worked in which was Reston was not a union. I hear that majority of the hospitals in NYC are unions. Wondering if anyone has any info about hospitals in Staten Island especially about Staten Island university hospital and if they would hire a new grad in the ER. Thanks to anyone who replies moving from VA to NYC is a big Change.

nstraugh....I'm also an RN in the process of moving from VA to NYC and have been researching hospitals and nursing jobs in the area for the past couple months. Most hospitals welcome new grads...just be sure to ask about any contract agreement such as having to sign on for a couple years. Don't know if you are aware but there's a Nursing Job Fair being held at the White Plains Marriott on August 2nd....sponsored by Nursing Spectrum. It's free and you can get more info if you Google Nursing Spectrum Events...it's actually in Tarrytown (part of White Plains I think). Job fairs are a great way to meet the recruiters face to face...there's a long list of hospitals that will be present. Hope this helps and let me know if I can offer any other info.

Nursing unions are generally a good thing...especially in light of the nursing shortage.

There's a fairly big difference between White Plains and Tarrytown, about 10 miles worth. I believe there's a Marriott in both Tarrytown and White Plains though, so you better figure out which one it is.

If its in the White Plains Marriott try and stop in the Chinese restaurant they have there on the gorund floor (its called Aberdeen) It is probably the best Chinese restaurant in all of Westchester country.

My friend's sister lives in North Jersey and she started with $80K straight out of nursing school. I've thought about getting into nursing myself so i can get back to NY with that kind of salary. In Long Island, they're starting at around $75k. I'm supposed to take my first chemistry pre-req course this Fall. Oh I just don't know if that's the way to go....

Starting salary of $80k for a nurse? What, are you for real? Where do nurses top out at salary wise?

I think $80K right out of nursing school sounds a bit inflated. Maybe an experienced, specialized nurse could make that much. If I'm wrong I hope other nurses will chime in.
The good thing about nursing now is that there's a shortage...so you'll always be able to find work. The bad thing about nursing is also that there's a shortage...so the working conditions are very tough.

I'd guess that the average nurse in the NYC metro area would start out around $40-50k per year. If it really is $80k per year, then I'd be really surprised. I mean I could see $80k at a number of select hospitals in Manhattan, but beyond that I really couldn't see a hospital starting a nurse at a salary higher than $50k a year.

Maybe I'm mistaken though, because I don't know that much about nursing.
