Never say never, a big chunk of downtown Manhattan used to be a real ****hole. Change happens...

Agreed...this city, despite the past 30 years of harsh isolation and government handouts, is historically all about change..and it is just now getting back into the groove again. Change is coming!

Yeah, and it wasn't that long ago either. As late as 1992 I had a friend who lived on Norfolk St. on the lower east side who was afraid to be home alone because her block was so violent. That was only 16 years ago. The LES has been cleaned up for quite awhile already.
Back in the '80's I found parts of Alphabet City / lower East Side much scarier than I find 161 St today.

I can provide you an equal number of people who are happy to be in the Bronx for the large apts, affordability, access to all sorts of educational institutions (most in the city), access to so many parks for their kids (most in the city), and alot of affordable shopping for them and their family.
But hey...what do I know...I am just a local after all...

Well, surprisingly the parents tell me a lot about their personal problems. I don't know why they do, but they do. I guess it's because I tell them about their child's behavior and they go off on how they need to work all the time and can't take care of them, then they go off and say how they wish they could move out of the area. I haven't come across one parent that likes this area. I don't know why a parent would want to raise a kid in a crime infested area like this, when other parts of the city offer just as much, but with less crime.

How many are single income families?
How many know what neighborhoods to look for?
Most importantly, how many can afford to move out?
Etc, etc, etc...

Rachel...if you read your post, your comment was very intriguing. You said parents complained about the neighborhood , but when they revealed their personal problems to you, their reasons for a problem child/wanting to get out were b/c they "were working all the time and could not watch their kids." This has nothing to do with a bad neighborhood, or bad schools, it has to do with a mom, probably single and poor and uneducated, who has to work all the time just to pay bills, and has not time for anything else, like raising a kid!
Furthermore, I don't believe anyone wants to raise their kids in a high crime area, however since we need money to live, those that do not have as much as others are forced to make compromises about everything, including where they live, how they live, etc. Nonetheless, the comment is very revealing in that it indicates that we have an entire poor, uneducated underclass in our society that cannot take care of themselves, and certianly cannot take care of a child. So we have neighborhoods with kids unsupervised, wreaking havoc because parents are working all day/and/or are incapable of caring for themselves/a kid....and violah! Mott Haven is born.

Education is key.....yet another reason why subpar schools and segregated neighborhoods are not only bad for residents, they are bad for society as a whole, as it affects us all at the end of the day.
