What kind of segregation are you referring to and how exactly is it bad? There are many segregated neighborhoods right here in NY and I don't see the inhabitants wearing specific masks of misery or pain, solely as a result of living in a homogeneous NH . Should everything be "diverse" ? When does it become "too much" -

A teacher once claimed - the more diverse a school is, the better the performances of the students etc. So I asked him, how that applies to an area/Region/Country where everyone was "the same"? After a brief pause - he said - well if they increase "diversity", the over all academic performance will improve. What a load of polished garbage -

How the hell does a student's ability to factor quadratic equations for instance, depend on the "diversity" of the student body? Please .......

Basically u need to segregrate the schools in NYC, but academically not racially, which is actualy what they attempt to do

It just so happens that most of the worst schools, have the children of the poorest/least educated new yorkers, who are overwhelmingly black and hispanic.

Don't worry they'll eventually make there ways to the trailer park just like all those dumb white people did before.

Those that can function will move to nicer neighborhoods to live in just like smarter white people did before.

BX718..if you cannot, using your own common sense and life experience, understand what segregation I am referring to, and why it is bad for the kids, as well as society as a whole, I won't waste the time explaining it to you.

Jrock..I sorta agree with what you are saying..sorta.

Default um...back to the topic?

Geez, how did this thread get so off topic...and so, well, ugly?

Yeah, the connection between poverty, crime and a lack of education seems clear. But this is true all across the nation, not sure how the discussion relates specifically to the Yankee Stadium area of the Bronx other than, yes, there are a fair number of poor, relatively uneducated people in the area. But does that mean we simply give up on the place or pretend it doesn't exist?

Just not sure what y'all are saying.

As for diversity, I think it's generally a good thing. Norwood is very diverse. The practical effect of that diversity is that no one group owns the neighborhood. It's nobody's "turf". Which is part of what makes it relatively safe and peaceful, I think.

As for "if you can't feed 'em, don't breed em" - I have to say I find the terminology a little heartless and insensitive. But yes, this does seem to be an off-shoot of the poverty and lack of education we're talking about. I see so many young people, mostly women, carrying a newborn with a toddler or two in tow. Many of these parents seem to have no particular interest or talent for raising children. But it's all they know - you get to be a certain age, you start having kids. This, it seems, is the definition of adulthood for many of them and the only real option they see for the future.

But simply insulting these young people doesn't solve anything. We need to make an aggressive effort to educate these kids, both about birth control and the ramifications of parenting and, even more than that, the vast world of possibilities other than parenting and beyond their limited experience.

And, of course, there are many exceptions; parents who truly are engaged with their children, who do have a talent and show an interest.

Dumping on poor, uneducated people simply because their poor and uneducated solves nothing.
