Everyone - thanks for your posts! I actually upped my budget to $1600. I can afford it. I may be a little apartment poor, but I can do it. If I don't, the commute from less expensive areas sounds like it will kill me. Or, it will be very difficult to find what I want. However, I did get a broker who is going to show me places, so hopefully she can find some gems.

I'm so excited to move to NY and hope all NYers are just as nice and responsive as you guys!

I plan to move to Brooklyn in the Fall 2014. I have been living in the Hudson Valley for the past 5 years and I am relocating back to NYC because of a job offer.

I am a native NYCer but even in the 5 years I've been gone, neighborhoods have changed! Who would ever thought Bushwick would be "up and coming"? Or that BedStuy is getting gentrified?

I have a budget of $1600 to $1800 for a 1 bedroom. With the influx of the "up and coming" hoods, (e.g Ditmas Park, Crown Heights, etc), which is really the best bang for my buck? I am afraid that Sunset Park and Bay Ridge are now overpriced? Any advice will be greatly appreciated...
