I am trying to help a friend who really wants to send his son to a Catholic HS but recently had his hours cut at work and meeting the tuition may be a problem. I believe that it is possible to get a quality public education from one of the NYC specialized high schools that is comparable to Catholic school in terms of course options, honors/AP classes, placement rates at top tier colleges however, the problem is that his son is a senior and did not take the SHSAT (the specialized HS entrance exam). He could take it and enter in the 10th grade if he passes. In the meantime, he needs to find a public school in Queens. Any recommendations for schools that are academically challenging and safe?

Many thanks.

Here's some more info:
The parents want a well-rounded academic experience. The Catholic School they are considering is Archbishop Molloy H.S. Any thoughts on Forest Hills HS as an alternative?

I dont have an answer but I attended Molloy (graduated '96) and it was a very good school back then, I am sure it still is.
