I happen to have preferred the tokens too. But let's face it: we've got the MetroCards now, and it would be an even bigger waste of money to scrap them and bring tokens back.
Since I no longer take the subway/bus to work anymore, I just get disposable metrocards and pay as I go. This happens to me everytime: When I have my final amount on the card, I go to swipe it, and it says "please swipe again at this turnstile." When I swipe it again, it says I have insufficient funds, even though I had more than enough money on it. And I know I have enough to ride again. It's ridiculous...it's not like I swiped it wrong either--I grew up riding the subway, so I know the correct way to swipe it.
It's such a ripoff, it's like the turnstiles are programmed to say that, and take the money off your card at the same time. I always end up going to the booth and I tell the person it took the money leftover on my card, and usually they're nice enough to allow me to go through the gate.
Does this ever happen to anyone else??? I'm pretty mad by it constantly happening when I have just enough for one ride left
I get that sometimes whether or not I have one ride left. It says "please swipe again at this turnstile" but it never works when you do swipe again. Now I just walk away when I get that message and use another turnstile.

Well, the Metrocards will be going the way of the dinosaur also when the smartcards come through. Eventually a number of systems in the NY/NJ/CT metro area will be using one smartcard system.
It would have been really nice if RFID payment system with Citibank that they used on 4,5,6 trains expanded to elsewhere.. no need to worry about machine not swiping correctly...
it's pain in the back to get back to Metrocard system after all those fancy payment systems in Seoul and Tokyo.
I usually have this problem as well. However I seem to encounter it using unlimited metro cards. Sometimes when I swipe once and it'll give me the "Swipe Again" message, do it again, same message so after swiping a few more times on the same turnstile with no luck, I try on a different turnstile, come to my surprise when I swipe I get a message saying "Already Used" or something like that and I have to wait like another 10-15 mins to used it again, even though it never took a fare just gave me a bunch of errors
Don't even get me started on those "free" Metrocard transfers. Oh and another rant, why can't I no longer use bus transfers to get on the subway?? Back in the day I remember being able to get a transfer from the bus driver and being able to use it to get on the train. So now I gotta spend another $2.25 to hop on the subway?? Ridiculous

I know, it usually always happens when I'm up to the last ride on my card. Once I paid for another ride, but after that I realized it's a waste of money, so I tell the workers and they let me through from now on. As long as ask nicely and explain the situation, they should let you through.
ok this sort of happened to me yesterday but when I swiped it a second time; it let me thru.
I know that it has happened to a bunch of people too. good to know if it happens again - and there is someone there - i can still persuade them to get me on the train!
Most of the glitches with the metrocard I've noticed seem to be with the limited ones. I've never had any issues with unlimited cards. Personally I think the metrocard system is wasteful. If the MTA wasn't such a financial disaster I'd seriously push for a new payment method...
It is a pain in the arse, who has time to be swiping 2 and 3 times, especially when the train is there........... ugh, nothing is easy for us working people, nothing.
