What? You can't do that anymore? I thought it's free to transfer from
subway to bus and vice versa with metrocard.

It is free. But the MetroCard transfer between bus and subway (or subway and bus) is only good for three hours after you first swipe your pass. Wait longer than that to make the transfer, and you're paying full fare again. Mayorofnyc is evidently not telling us the whole story.

It is free within the 3 hour time frame, but there are many times it doesn't work and you get charged another fare. It's happened to me coming directly from a bus to the subway or from a crosstown bus to an up/downtown bus.

MetroCards are great. I could make a living putting together the pieces of fares left all over the streets of NYC

They didn't use to.....one time when it happened to me I had to not only buy a new Metrocard, but fill in and send out all this paperwork just to get a check for a couple of bucks by the MTA 2 months later. Bureaucracy at its finest! You're right, tokens were better.
