Area By Yankee Stadium (Bedford, Walton: apartment, neighborhoods, shops)

Does anyone know what the area near Yankee Stadium is like? Around the 167th st. stop on the 4 and B/D trains?

I heard it's relatively safe near the park, but shadier as you get farther...Is that considered the South Bronx? That borough is huuuuge!

I would suggest that you walk around there on a non-game day to get an idea of it. That area is part of South Bronx. The immediate area around the stadium and the courts is not that bad. There are actually some pretty nice apartment buildings around there.

Don't stray too far though, I'm still not sure about the side streets as you get further away from the trains and the stadium area. From what I hear those parts are still pretty crappy.

What brings you to the BX?

Yeah the BX is huge. People don't realize, quite a bit of the BX is parkland and suburban areas. It's kinda weird actually.

The area immidiately around Yankee Stadium during games has a huge police presence. There is a special detail offered to flood the corner of River and 161st Street with police presence. It's pretty safe at that time, if anything happens there is never an officer too far away. Once you go beyond 2 or 3 blocks your pretty much on your own. Those areas outside the sheild are where most muggings usually after Yankee games occure.

However after the Yankee games the area is dead. Especially along River Avenue. E 161st has a few shops frequented by locals, so it has foot traffic. Mostly bodegas, hip hop clothing stores, old spanish/chinese food places. There is a movie multiplex a few blocks down in Concourse Village which has become a violence hot spot over the years. Also some more hip hop/99 cents stores. E 165th a few blocks up is a heavy drug location, especially Walton and 165th Street.

Now you ask about E 167th. That is one train stop up on the 4. Lots of drug activity in that area. That's all there is to say, there are only a few ghetto stores immidiately near the station along 167th. However the rest of the area is residential and the foot traffic is dead. Meaning you only see people hanging out in front of buildings.

As for the South Bronx, the areas in the Bronx with extreme poverty spread from the tip of the South Bronx to Bedford Park Blvd (it fizzels out north of that to Van Courtlant Park). All these neighborhoods have lots of poverty and problems associated with. Some pockets are better then others but they are all effected in some way due to proximity.
