How is parking in East NY (Brooklyn)?
I'm looking for a teaching job, and I am going to P.S. 13 to do a demonstration lesson for this school. I live in Maspeth (Queens), which is only 5 miles away, so I will only be about 5 miles away from the school. No sense in taking public transportation, since that will take an hour and a half or more to just go 5 miles. Anyway, the school is located on 557 Pennsylvania Ave, right by Riverdale Ave, New Lots Ave, and Livonia Ave. Should I get there very early to try and find parking? Is there a parking garage? Any advice at all would be helpful, thanks

Parking in East NY and the rest of the city is really bad. Good luck finding a spot (or your car). Haha.
No but seriously it is bad. Few people have a driveway so they park on the street. So no parking. You may get lucky since some of those people take a car to work. May be a wait. No garages in that area either (and don't try parking on a vacant lot, haha).
But that school has subway access right above it. May want to take the train. The school is on the same block as the train so you won't have to walk through the neighborhood (You don't want to). The problem is I don't know if that train travels into your neighborhood (Or even Queens at all).

on hopstop.com it says the subway will take nearly 2 hours!!! That's a hell of a long time to travel somewhere that's only 5 miles away, lol. Bus is an hour and a half. Do you think it has better/worse parking than Morrisiana? I didn't have too much trouble finding parking there.
you sure know a lot about these bad areas and the parking situations! thanks for all your help so far.

When I worked in NYC, I often went to ENY and parked with no problem. And no incidents, either!

have you asked the school if there is a visitor's spot you can park in while you give the demo?

I highly doubt it. Parking is usually reserved for administration or the higher ups.

The parking situation in both areas is pretty much the same. Not many parking spots and no garages. It's difficult finding parking all over the city due to the lack of driveways. So there is a lack of parking on the curb. I guess you will have to just wait and see how long it takes to get a spot. Sometimes it just really depends on the time you arrive.
And again like I said before. Make sure doors are locked and items (radio, bags, ect) placed out of view. You don't want to return to a smashed window and it happens very often in these areas.

Call a cab. Then you can walk the area and check out if there are in fact any parking lots for later reference. Take the pressure off yourself, and call a cab or a car service. You are under enough pressure without worrying about not being able to find a spot in a safe place.
That is what I would do.

Don't really have time for that. I'm on Long Island right now in my house since my parents are moving to Florida in 2 days, and on Saturday I will be in Queens unpacking stuff in my apartment and getting things setup. Then on Sunday I will be gone all day at a concert. I think I'll be ok. The school is only 5 miles away from Maspeth, so it's not like I will need to leave 3 hours early for the drive.
thanks for the help :-)
