You definitely don't need a lot of money to live in the outer boroughs and enjoy yourself. I just moved to Queens (Maspeth), and have my own little apartment on the other side of my Aunt's house. It's very small, but doable for now. They charge $500 plus utilities. My dad is paying it until I start teaching in September, and I only have about $480 to last me until the end of August. I'm doing fine so far. I don't go out and party at all, so that saves a lot of money. I enjoy just taking walks, going to the library, doing cheap, or free stuff. When I'm with my boyfriend, we just relax together. No need to go out and have fun. I'm enjoying myself here, even though I don't have much money at all. So it can work out if you're not the type of person who needs to spend a lot of money to have fun.

gdowler is on a distinguished road
My husband and i live very comfortably on less than 50K. I know that sounds insane, but: i get to work part time and enjoy all the city has to offer, we were fortunate to get a hookup on our rental apt. in Queens, 25 min commute to the city,a backyard where i plant veggies and flowers, a great thrift store around the corner (so i can look like a million bucks), and still manage to save for retirement. We really have it good. Why I am thinking of moving has me a bit confused. But city life can get tiring sometimes. I don't believe in working my life away. It is nice to sometimes take it easy and enjoy what you work for.
