Question place to live between staten island and stamford, ct??

Hello,

My fiancee may be getting a job in stamford, ct and i will be attending the college of staten island beginning in a couple of months (we are moving from dallas, tx)

My question is: where should we live so we both have the best possible commutes to our respective jobs?

We would prefer a 2-bedroom apt to rent for no more than $1500-1800/month, but around 900 would be awesome (although probably unrealistic)

Also, given your suggestion would we need 2 cars, 1 car, no cars?; how would we best use public transportation to get where we both need to go if not a car?

Lots of questions I know, any help and I would be VERY grateful!
