Why do you think you will get made fun of? You might stick out in terms of your accent or how you approach things, but I don't think you will be put down for that, per se. Keep in mind that many of the Black people in NYC have Southern roots too. So, they might think you are someone's cousin or whatever, for all they know.

With that said, is there anything that you are looking for in terms of where you want to live, the type of work you are looking for and what you like to do for "fun"? I think answering those questions, among others will make your move easier.

Southern is fine- and many people find the accent & manners charming.

Stupid southerner is another thing altogether- just don't embody the stupid southerner "steoreotype" (uneducated, un-cultured, slow, etc) and you'll be just fine!

I think coming from Atlanta you will do just fine. You know what goes on in a city and probably grew up in a normal environment similar to most transplants. As long as you know what to expect you will be just fine.

I think a person from a town of 1,000 in Mississippi "southern bell" type of girl might have a little bit more of an adjustment.

Why would you even pose this question? NYC has every type of person in the world, but somehow you are worried about being a Southerner in NYC? I am fairly confident that if an immigrant Vietnamese peasant can find his way in NYC and be happy and successful, any other actual American will do fine. Assuming you don't come with an "I deserve XYZ" mentality that is.

There are tons of Southerners here, my alumni chapter from the U of Texas has 9,000 members in the area alone. Not to mention that Georgia and Florida have big chapters here too. You won't have a problem.

New York is too big of a city to care about where you are from. The people that live here come from all over the world - not just from all over the country. I have lots of friends in NYC that are from the south - including my husband!

You will do fine here in nyc, besides a quarter of the city population has ancestral ties to the south or in other terms African Americans. You will be fine here. Everyday I run into southeners asking about how to get around nyc. Actually there is also influx of southerners coming to nyc hoping for better oppurtunities which are currently lacked in thier home towns. Where I work I have alot of southern tenants. What I find funny is that most southerners here in nyc also tend to stick with other southerners instead of mingleing with locals. As for neigborhoods try Harlem or Morningside hieghts or try Astoria queens which also have alot os single southerners as well.

Where you live really depends a lot on your budget. If we knew your budget - we would be able to suggest neighborhoods in your price range.
