Sounds like there's a trend going on, past middle-aged ladies wanting to move to the city? I"ve read two so far who are toying with the idea and I make three! I'm 51 and am finishing my masters in educational leadership. Have been developing a plan for some time to move to NYC. To do it while I still can sort of thing. Maybe Annieproductions or Jeanniemcgee and I should talk about sharing an apt. Just kidding. I really can't make up my mind yet if I want city or extreme rural (nature).

I say go for it!
I agree, you should totally go for it! I'm 47 and thinking about it as well. Single, no attachments, don't expect to have any problem finding a job, however affordable housing is another matter.
I just got back from a business trip in the city and everytime I go I try to picture myself living there. This trip I worked in the Bronx but stayed in Tribeca (not convenient but had to shop around for the best hotel rates). Please update the thread on your decision......keeps the rest of us motivated.

I moved back to New York (after 30 years away) last year at age 49. It's OK, but it was a lot more fun (and a lot less expensive!) when I was 19.
Still, I'd never discourage anyone else from giving it a try. You'll kick yourself forever if you pass up the opportunity and, who knows, you might even like it here .....

MORE IMPORTANT- Will I survive the life change?? Sunny southern Cal (although the people and culture have a bit to be desired) for BROOKLYN???!!! Not necessarily "the dream"- usually the reverse, but my family is in surrounding area, offered a good job, and engaged to be married to a CA native who is ready for a change.
Thoughts or any words of wisdom??

I lived in Manhattan, but moved to Brooklyn about a year and a half ago.
Surprisingly, I love it!!! Brooklyn is becoming sooooo popular that even areas that are still a little edgy, are getting expensive. We live in Bay Ridge and are paying 1350 for a 2 bedroom but with only street parking. We were in Park Slope and were paying around 2 Grand for a 2 Bedroom.
Good luck.
PM me if you like.

If you work in MIDTOWN Manhattan. If you work in the Financial District, Brooklyn or parts of NJ are a much better option.
Having lived in both Queens and Brooklyn, I can say the transportation is much better in Brooklyn.

Living in New York City
I am 55 years of age, retired NYPD, and have been living in New York City since 1952. I welcome you to the safest city in the world, and hope you enjoy it. I am married so my take is a little different than someone single in our age bracket but am sure you will adjust. I live in Manhattan and my only complaint has always been it is hard sometimes to sleep depending on where you live and how high up you are. I live on the 5th floor of a building on the west side so it can get noisy at times. I would try and stay away from any area with restaurants or clubs. Traffic noise usually ends after 10 p.m. but there is always a siren someplace.
