I know that NYC has a vibrant Irish and Irish/American community. I'll be visiting NYC later this week and like to visit Irish pubs when I travel. Looking for something as authentic as possible - with live Irish traditional music. I'm staying in MidTown Manhattan, close to Macy's but am willing to take the subway and travel a bit for a good pub.

Any suggestions?

The best and most authentic originated in Manhattan, but has found a new home in Red Hook, Brooklyn:

Rockysullivans.com

There's a free water taxi service (20 minute ferry ride) that connects from lower Manhattan to Red Hook.

Traditional Irish music on Monday and Wednesday nights. Celtic hip-hop on Saturday evenings with Chris Byrne (former Black 47 and co-owner of
Rocky Sullivan's).

You can also try Ceolpub.com (on Smith Street in Bklyn.) Great, authentic Irish food and karaoke nights. Occasionally, there is live, traditional Irish music (I think on Sunday afternoons, but not positive). You'd have to check with them for dates/times of live music.

Enjoy your stay in NYC!

Thank you! I am so impressed that your water taxis and ferries are free! Here in Chicago, nothing is. Our water taxi which is a 5 minute ride down the Chicago River, costs $2.00 each way.

Looks like we may be going to either O'Neill's on 3rd Avenue or Rocky Sullivans. My husband plays traditional Irish music so that's a must.
